This fireplace trammel is one of the items passed in the last James D. Julia Inc. auction.
I recommend The Julia auction house for several important reasons:
This trammel is most unusual and is one of the finest I have seen on the market in many years. I have personally offered dozens of fireplace trammels over the years.
Circa 1836, Germany. This fine and
unusual large example fireplace trammel, engraved with a stylized folk art pineapple
beneath the inscription “ANNO/1836/IEGU”, above an engraved heart
with the inscription “TREUE/UND/LIEBE” above a pair of potted
plants, all above a stylized thistle over two aligned touch marks
possibly identifying the maker. The adjustable arm engraved with a
bird within a foliate border mounted with two turned brass knobs. The
trammel has been slightly burnished. SIZE: 40″ l (closed).
Approximately 52″ l (open). 15″ w. CONDITION: Burnished as noted,
engravings and decoration in very good condition, brass elements with
normal and expected denting from in use wear. One iron leaf tip
present but detached, some adjustments need to be made to the
stationary arm to allow for height adjustment, otherwise very good.
