Build This Antique Testing Kit
for the Field

This page updated May 14, 2018.

Having a testing kit when you're in the field, whether garage sale hunting, at auction, or browsing the stalls at a mall, there are a few tools you should have in your kit that will build your confidence and may prevent making serious mistakes.

As an Amazon affiliate, I have included links to products I recommend, but there are many brands and prices available at Amazon and other retailers. (We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.)

The point is these products are inexpensive and provide information in the field (or at home) that you need for properly evaluating and testing antiques.

The complete kit will also contain a small notebook, pen, soft lead pencil and tissue paper (for obtaining rubbings of marks), a tape measure, and a camera or smartphone.

In addition to a tool kit, you should also have a handy reference in the field that you can use to quickly acquire current pricing and value information as well as an ability to easily document your finds for future reference or purchase. Going to this page will give you access to extensive digital references.
